Proposal

We were given the brief to create a teaser trailer, a film magazine front cover and a poster for a film that we have proposed. The genre we have decided to use is drama, mainly the sub-genre of urban-youth drama. The main elements of this genre are anti- social behaviour such as violence, sex and drug abuse. These elements are to create a representation of British youth. Our USP will be that our previous film won the BAFTA for outstanding British film award.

The UK Film Council carried out an exit poll on people who had watched ‘KiDULTHOOD’, they questioned 211 people and found that 158 were under 25, this equates to 74%. 42% of people that watched it were male leaving 58% who were female. We looked at the exit poll of ‘KiDULTHOOD’ as it in in the same genre of our proposed film, and uses similar codes and conventions that we shall use in ours. We looked at other films in the same genre and found a similar trend; Adulthood, out of 157 surveyed, 86 were female and 83 were aged between 18 and 24; 4.3.2.1, out of 130 people surveyed, 72 were male and 73 were under 25; Ill manors, out of 96 people surveyed 56% were male and 52% were under 25. We also looked at the film ‘This is England’, this film represented British youth of the 80’s. The representations that we found were aspects of anti-social behaviour; racism, swearing & violence. It showed the youth having a lack of respect toward authority figures. We also looked at the film ‘Fish Tank’; it is a bildungsroman (coming-of-age story) and also a British drama film. This can relate to our proposed film as it shows the events at a pivotal point in our young protagonist’s life.

Our proposed idea meets the brief as we are going to create a teaser trailer, a film magazine front cover and a poster. Urban youth dramas are becoming increasingly popular as there has been a recent focus on modern youth culture especially because of the media for example, the riots. Because of this, we believe our idea would fit into the current market.

Our goal is to create a teaser trailer, a film magazine front cover and a poster for our youth drama film. Our film is for a target audience of 16-24 year olds. We need to complete this by Friday the 14th of December.

Synopsis

Our film follows the story of Nicole, a 15 year old girl that is swept into a life of sex, crime and drugs, after her mum’s alcohol addiction spirals out of control, Nicole finds solace in local bad boy, Ramone. He introduces her to drugs and she uses this as a way to escape from her traumatic past. Her drug addiction leads to her skipping school to shoplifting; her addiction gets worse so she turns to Ramone for help. However he persuades her to have sex with him and his friends for drug money. One of his friends, Liam falls for Nicole as he sees past her troubled life style and wants to help her. Nicole feels she is in too deep and decides to end it all. The film ends with her over dosing on drugs and sinking into a bath of water as Liam races to her rescue. But is it too late?

The main obstacles our project will face are location and timing. We can overcome the problem of location by doing a full recce of any location we’d like to use. As for timing we will organise ourselves accurately and make sure we finish on time.  We have also taken into consideration night filming as we feel the film will need a dark atmosphere to suit the genre. Since we are filming in autumn/winter months, we know that it will be darker earlier; however we can use this to our advantage because it means we can film darker scenes in times more convenient for us. We will also take into consideration any health and safety issues and make sure this does not pose any risk towards our actors or filming.

Our schedule is to have completed our first draft by the 14thof December, and to have our final draft completed by the 27th of March.

Resources we will need:

Actors, we have 3 main protagonists and estimate about 5-7 minor actors

A house

Stereotypical ‘street’ clothing

A car

Miscellaneous props such as drinks bottles, drugs, money et/c.
